Torchbearer Honey Badger Hot Sauce Review

I was not sure what to expect when I requested a sample of the Torchbearer Honey Badger Hot Sauce. First off, I had never heard of the company until all of a sudden, I received a giant box of hot sauce which was so heavy it felt like I was holding bricks. After opening the invite, I inspected the bottle to find a great deal of information about the company:

Today, we’re reviewing a new hot sauce from The Honey Badger, a company that started out in 2010 when a group of friends got together to make hot sauce. It came about from a love of hot sauce, a love of good food, and a mutual love of friends and family. We are all about making tasty hot sauce that tastes great, and we stand by our products and the commitment we make to our customers.

One of the hallmarks of any review is that it will go beyond just a mere description of the product itself. This should be apparent by now, as I have spent quite a bit of time with various fine sauces. I will keep this review simple, though the word complex may be something that you will hear a lot in reference to this product.

Holy honey badger. This honey mustard hot sauce has it all. And it’s not a total surprise, because Torchbearer Honey Badger Hot Sauce also uses super hot peppers among its ingredients. It’s very spicy, but is there enough honey mustard flavor to complement and balance the spiciness? What about ease of use? Is it versatile enough to take its rightful place in your hot sauce rotation? Let’s look this tie straight in the eye and find out what it’s made of.

A sweet and spicy heat. Three words can tell you a lot about Torchbearer Honey Badger Hot Sauce. Almost every ingredient in this bottle corresponds to one of these adjectives: Apple cider vinegar, scorpion pepper, honey, distilled white vinegar, water, canola oil, brown sugar, mustard powder, Carolina Reaper pepper, white sugar, cayenne pepper powder, black pepper, turmeric, mustard seeds, chelated garlic, salt and garlic.

This scorpion pepper is at the top of the list, so it’s no surprise that it dominates your first bite. It’s all about the heat… at first. But then comes the taste of apple and white vinegar. The sweetness of honey mustard is the groundbreaking flavor here. It may take a few bites of the Honey Badger Hot Sauce before you get past the intense heat and initial aftertaste to really feel the sweetness.

When the sweetness comes (if you’ve dealt with the heat), it complements the background heat beautifully. It’s sweet, but not too sweet.

There is some garlic and salt towards the end of the meal, but these are definitely not the main flavors. Honey Badger Hot Sauce contains only 30 mg of sodium per teaspoon (1% of your daily requirement). That’s a relatively small amount of salt, especially considering that most people who aren’t real foodies won’t use more than a few drops of this sauce at a time.

Heat balance

Honey Badger hot sauce uses two bad boys on the Scoville scale: Scorpion and Carolina Reaper peppers. It’s a real shot of fresh, spicy pepper. Scorpion pepper is the main pepper here, as you can see from its place in the ingredients list. Carolina Reaper is more of a choral piece on this sauce.

Fresh Scorpion peppers are worth between 1.2 and 2 million Scoville heat units, while Carolina Reaper peppers are worth between 1.4 and 2.2 million Scoville heat units. For perspective: Fresh jalapeño peppers contain 2,500 SHU to 8,000 SHU. In a nutshell: Honey Badger has legitimate arguments.

This legitimate heat is of course diluted with other ingredients. But it’s still at the extra strong level of hot sauce (and at the borderline super strong for a hot sauce): about 99,000 SHU. Compared to another scorpion pepper-based hot sauce, Tabasco Scorpion, Honey Badger hot sauce is almost twice as strong on the Scoville scale (50,000-99,000 SHU).

The heat hits at first glance and settles in quickly. And it lingers for a few minutes, even after a single bite. I can use up to three tablespoons at a meal, if it’s more, my tongue burns a little more than I’d like. But I like things pretty hot. If you’re not a fan of heat, expect a much lower threshold.

Overall, it’s a good balance of warmth and flavor. The flavor is not particularly complex, but is important enough to counterbalance and even complement the spiciness.

This is a sauce for true lovers of spices. So if you don’t want to make the Sriracha or Tabasco too spicy, keep it simple. The heating limits the use somewhat. Don’t let the name honey mustard fool you. Look under it and see the word murderer.

If you like spicy, Honey Badger Hot Sauce is perfect for you. It goes well with all the classic dishes that can be used with honey mustard sauce. Chicken nuggets? Look at this. Sandwiches? Look at this.

I also liked it with every potato dish, and it was a surprise winner in the carne asada tacos.

Although they are subject to the same restrictions as all honey mustards. If it doesn’t work with a spice that doesn’t require heat treatment, it certainly won’t work with Honey Badger Hot Sauce.

Few hot sauce brands are as reliable as Torchbearer when it comes to flavor and style. I love that the company was founded by three guys (Vid, Ben, and Tim, for those of you who play Trivial Pursuit or Hot Sauce) who had a bunch of extra habaneros lying around in their backyard that they didn’t want to throw away. This is a great moment, let’s make a group.

Honey Badger Hot Sauce leaves no stone unturned when it comes to packaging. Seriously, compared to Torchbearer, the labels of other hot sauce brands look like a simple sleepover. It’s bold, fun and unique. Not only can you collect them for their taste, but they also look like a fantastic comic book when they are all lined up on your shelf.

The only nuance is that it’s easy to be seduced by the honey mustard appeal of this sauce because the label downplays its heat a bit. Yes, the word killer is present here, but it seems separate – as if it could only describe a cartoon character on a label. It’s a small thing, but I can understand why some people were very surprised at the first bite.

Torchbearer’s Honey Badger Hot Sauce combines an extra hot spice with the tangy sweetness of honey mustard. The spiciness and flavor are well balanced, and the Torchbearer wrapper is always a blast. Be warned: This one is hotter than you think!
