Grilled chicken skewers are one of the best appetizers for the holidays. It’s convenient if you’re eating it on the go, because you can bite it right off the stick and it comes out perfectly juicy and seasoned without having to use sauce.

In fact, these teriyaki chicken skewers are very versatile, as they can be served as a main course or an appetizer. If you’re taking something to a barbecue or party, these skewers go well with other dishes.

Which chicken to use

The juiciest part of the chicken is the thigh, and that’s what we’re using in this recipe. Chicken thigh meat does not dry out like breast meat and absorbs many of the flavors of the marinade, so it remains juicy and flavorful after cooking. It is therefore preferable to use skinless and boneless chicken.

If you only have a boneless and skinless chicken breast, this is also possible, but you must be careful not to overcook the meat, otherwise it will become dry.

Which teriyaki sauce to use

I use store-bought teriyaki sauce for this recipe. It’s not that the sauce is difficult to make yourself, but you can buy a really good teriyaki sauce ready-made, so why not make it easier? Eindelijk, het zijn gemakkelijke Teriyaki Kip Spiesjes.

I prefer the brand Soy Vay Veri Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce. It has a balanced flavor – sweet and strong, with notes of ginger, garlic and soy. It’s not too thin or too thick, which is great because it’s hard to find the right balance. I highly recommend this sauce if you can find it. The low-sodium version is the best.

You can buy it on Amazon (this is our affiliate link). Or you can find it in most grocery stores in the United States. I also like La Choy Teriyaki and Blue Dragon Teriyaki Marinade. I do not recommend Kikkoman Teriyaki marinade. It’s too runny and tastes more like soy sauce than teriyaki.

Chicken marinating

Ik gebruik een grote rits om de kip in te marineren. Mettez tous les cubes de poulet dans un sac et versez la moitié de la sauce dessus. Then massage the bag to make sure all parts of the chicken are covered and place in the refrigerator to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

You can also place the chicken in a bowl to marinate. Whichever method is easiest for you is exactly what you need to do.

Thread a chicken on a skewer

I use long bamboo skewers for these dishes, unless it’s a party or gathering where several dishes are served at once. I then use smaller wooden skewers to make half skewers that are more suitable for finger foods.

If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least 20 minutes before skewering the chicken so they don’t burn or fall apart on the grill.

When threading the chicken, do not over tighten. Leave some space between the chickens so they cook well and don’t burn.

Prepare chicken skewers on the grill

When the grill is hot, place the skewers on the grill, a few inches apart. Bake 3 to 5 minutes on each side until cooked through. At the end of the cooking time, brush both sides with the remaining sauce.

Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with hot mustard on the side, if desired.
