Low-Carb Turnip Gratin — Vegetarian Recipe

Turnip root is a humble and inexpensive root vegetable that, while plentiful in the U.S., has fallen off the radar in the UK where it’s considered a winter vegetable. The turnip gratin below is a simple vegetarian dish that can be served with roasted cauliflower, or tossed with cooked shiitake mushrooms and peppers.

Put a little pep in your step with this low-carb turnip gratin. This dish is perfect for a vegetarian or gluten-free diet.

I’ve had a lot of different turnip gratin recipes over the years, but today I’m sharing one that is low-carb. It’s also vegetarian, but for many people that’s not a big deal. I’m a meat-eater, and I love vegetables, so I’m always in favor of recipes that are vegetable based and have meat sparingly.. Do you need some potato gratin? It’s time to (drum roll, please) embrace the turnip, friends! This creamy side dish is very simple to make. A low-carb meal with a lot of flavor. The ideal partner for meat or fish! Mmmm.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).

  2. Peel the turnip, onion, and garlic. Everything should be finely sliced, preferably with a mandolin or food processor.

  3. Chop the chives finely.

  4. Butter a 9″ baking dish and layer onion, garlic, and turnip slices with chives and most of the cheese, saving some for the top. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. On top of the cream, sprinkle the remaining cheese. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbling.


If you replace the cream with coconut milk and leave out the cheese, this meal may be made dairy-free. Choose turnips with a smooth skin that are approximately the size of a tennis ball for the greatest taste.

Turnip gratin is a traditional French dish that is normally made with white turnips. Many people also use yellow turnips, although the two types of turnips are slightly different in texture and taste. For this dish, I used yellow turnips and added a few roasted vegetables.
