Far palak is an easy to prepare, delicious and healthy dish that you can include in your daily diet. You can serve the dal as rice or chapati dal, it is delicious both ways. This is a healthy low GI, vegan and gluten free meal perfect for a weeknight meal.

Dahl soup, or lentil soup as it is called in the western world, is an essential food in most Indian cuisines.

In Punjabi households, dal is considered a staple of our meals. Dal chawal or dal roti is considered a comfort food in most Indian households. Different recipes for dal exist throughout India, with the method of preparation (usually tempering or tadka) varying from region to region.

Ingredients for Dal Palak

Objectives: I use 3 lentils when I make this dal palak recipe. The split moong dal, which is also known as broken moong. It’s a whole moon, peeled, but split in half. The second valley I add is pigeon pea, also called toor dal, and chana dal.

You can also do it with moong dal, if you don’t want to use mixed dal.

Spinach/Palak: Fresh spinach leaves. If you can’t find fresh spinach, you can use frozen spinach.

Tomatoes: Fresh tomatoes are the best. But still: If you don’t have fresh sliced canned tomatoes, you can use those.

Ginger: grated

2 green chillies: chopped to tasteSauces and spices : Salt to taste, Kashmiri red chili powder, turmeric powder, asafoetida curl, dried red chili powder, coarsely ground chili powder.

Instant Pot Spinach Dal

Usually far palak/spinach is prepared in a pressure cooker in Indian homes, but you can also prepare far palak in an Instant Pot.

  1. Heat the ghee in a pan and add the grated ginger, a pinch of asafoetida/pelmeni (optional), chopped green chillies and chopped tomatoes and saute on low flame for 3-4 minutes.
  2. Now add the rinsed and washed spinach and dal along with salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder and water.
  3. Close the PI lid and activate the pressure cooker and low pressure cooker for 15 minutes.
  4. Let the Instant Pot cool naturally until the pressure is off and it is ready to serve.
  5. Put a tablespoon of ghee/oil in the pan to finally heat the tadka and then turn off the heat. Add 1 teaspoon coarsely ground chili powder and immediately pour it over the cooked far palak.

Recipe notes: Punjabi Mung Dal Palak

  • Punjabi moong dal palak recipe is usually made with moong dal (split moong dal) and palak (spinach). Some people prepare it with moon husk (yellow dal) or pigeon peas (tor dal).
  • Usually onion and tomato tadka and ginger garam masala are added to dal punjabi recipes. But the tadka for this dal palak long is a little different and very simple.
  • I would like to add a slight variation in terms of the valley used. I add a very small portion of Tora dal/Arhar dal and Chana dal/Gram dal to the recipe. This improves the taste considerably.

Palak is made from lentils and vegetables, which makes it a very healthy food. This is a naturally gluten free, low GI recipe suitable for diabetics. You can eat it in soup or shalam dal for a healthy and hearty meal. It is delicious with chapati or naan.

Kitchen for Dal Palak

You can wash the dal, peel and chop the spinach and tomatoes, grate the ginger last night and store in the fridge. This reduces cooking time because the food is well submerged. It only takes two minutes to get the food from the fridge to the stove.

Gluing the rear tent in place is easy and takes another 2 minutes. Therefore, the actual cooking time is only 4-5 minutes.

To save the Dahlsale

Leftover dal palak can be kept in the fridge for 2 days. If you want to reheat the dal, just put it in the microwave for 3-4 minutes and a bowl of hot dal is ready.

How to freeze:

Dalli is a very cold dish, which can be frozen. Dal Palak can be frozen as is. Use a glass jar that is freezer and microwave safe.

To serve, remove from freezer and place in refrigerator for a few hours to thaw and reheat as usual. That way Dal will taste better and be creamier. Dal palak can be kept in the freezer for up to 6-8 weeks, so be sure to check the storage date.

If you are making a batch specifically to freeze, you can cook it to 75%. Defrosting is not necessary with this method. Simply remove the lid, place the container in the microwave and cook for 10 minutes at maximum power.  Incredibly delicious and healthy spinach dal ready.

Instructions

  • Place the rinsed and soaked goodies, spinach, grated ginger and 2.5 cups of water in a pressure cooker. Also add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, crushed green chillies and a teaspoon of Kashmiri chilli powder.
  • Now let the pressure cooker whistle 2 to 3 times or run for 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the quantity and your pressure cooker. Allow the pressure cooker to cool naturally.
  • Open the pressure cooker and heat a pound of ghee in a tadka pan, add a pinch of asafoetida/hinga and 1 tablespoon of red chilli powder and dried red chillies.
  • Add this hot tadka immediately to the boiling dal and palak. Stir well and serve hot with chapati/fulka/paratha or rice.

Notes and tips for recipes

  5. You can heat a spoonful of ghee/oil to smoke, then turn off the heat and add 1 teaspoon of red chili powder and immediately add it to the dal pan.
